Travel Ban Because of an FIR: Bail and Getting Your Name Removed
When a criminal case follows you to the immigration counter — the order of steps that works.

Key points
- •Find out which agency asked for the listing and on which FIR.
- •Bail — pre-arrest or post-arrest — usually has to come first.
- •An FIR alone is not a sufficient basis for listing, according to the IHC.
- •Courts can permit travel while a case is pending, sometimes on conditions.
How does an FIR lead to a travel ban?
Police or FIA can ask for a person's name to be placed on a stop list such as the PNIL, and in serious cases on the PCL or ECL. In C.P. No. D-5773 of 2025 before the Sindh High Court, FIA said the petitioner had been placed on the PNIL at the request of Punjab Police over a criminal case; another Sindh petition concerned a Passport Control List entry linked to an Anti-Money Laundering Act FIR.
What is the right order of steps?
- 1
Get the FIR details
FIR number, police station, offence sections, and which agency requested the listing.
- 2
Secure bail
Pre-arrest bail if you have not been arrested, or post-arrest bail if you have. Travelling while avoiding a case usually backfires.
- 3
Apply for removal or permission to travel
With bail in hand, apply to the listing authority, and if refused, petition the High Court for removal or permission to travel.
- 4
Keep appearing in the case
Courts take your record of attending hearings into account when deciding whether you can travel.
Are there limits to what a court will do?
Yes. Courts weigh the seriousness of the case and the risk that you won't return, and may attach conditions to permission to travel. Removal from a Pakistani list also does not affect INTERPOL notices or extradition proceedings, which are separate.
Travel Ban Because of an FIR — FAQs
Common questions we are asked
Possibly, with the court's permission. Bail and a good record of appearing in the case make it far more likely.
Get the FIR details and apply for pre-arrest bail promptly, then deal with the listing. Don't try to travel again before that.
